Exclamation websites for analysing websites: what do you use?

I've always found it useful to analyse the websites of other online businesses i come in contact with to find out information about their traffic, trends, volumes etc.

Currently i'm using alexa which is great and compete whichis also good but does not give upto date traffic details. I also use socialmeter which is interesting but has questionable usefulness

What websites do other people here use???

Alexa I find is the most useful, the only thing I'd like to see it offer in future, don't know if it could for privacy reasons, is the number of visitors to each site.

Would get rid of a lot of these con sites that say get 15,000 visitors to your site a day like me - yet they are having to advertise on adwords!!

Compare with:

- Search engine ranking
- Google PageRank
- Alexa Ranking
- SE Backlinks
- SE Indexes

You can also look out for third-party stat counters which the website might have linked to.

The best tool to use is the search engines themselves. I typically only use Google. I'll do a search, and then take the top result, and look at all the information that I can find about them. How many backlinks, what is there PR, Alexa ranking, and most importantly, who's linking to them.

For my own sites, I use awstats periodically, but for the most part, I use Google webmaster tools, that will tell you a lot about your site....

from webalizer stats terms:*Visits occur when some remote site makes a request for a page on your server for the first time. As long as the same site keeps making requests within a given timeout period, they will all be considered part of the same Visit. If the site makes a request to your server, and the length of time since the last request is greater than the specified timeout period (default is 30 minutes), a new Visit is started and counted, and the sequence repeats. Since only pages will trigger a visit, remotes sites that link to graphic and other non- page URLs will not be counted in the visit totals, reducing the number of false visits.
So,my webalizer stats shows about 120 visitors per day, on the other hand Google analitics gives about 30 visits per day. Why is so much difference? Where is the truth?

Unhappy Re: websites for analysing websites: what do you use?

I find google analytics quite comprehensive and easy to setup and use. The funnels / goals setup is amazing and gives a really good idea where exactly do your users leave the goal...I also like the regional stats

So far I have only had troubles with understanding how to make it track sales done with paypal buy now buttons..but there is a lot of online help so I will just keep reading...

I should add that since I made this post, I have added a new tool to my repertoire. I highly recommend using http://www.hittail.com

It tracks visitors your sites from search engines, and what search term they use to find your site, as well as the time they first visited. Great tool.

I seriously suggest you don't, Alexa only tracks data from users who have the Alexa toolbar installed. Come on, who actually has it installed here...not me.

I tend to agree with Kieran on this issue. Although, I do have the Alexa toolbar installed, it's only good for IE, and I never ever ever use IE. My reason for not caring much for Alexa is because their stats vary depending on a lot of different criteria.....But, it can not be deemed as being a valid source for website analysis...Your best bet is to use several tools and try to get an average across those tools to find out how to better improve your site.

I have found one more domain look-up tool. It seems to be more accurate than iWeb and Alexa. It shows more data for my site than other.
Make your suggestion: http://www.dnscoop.com/
