Default How can we protect us against google bowling?

Some months ago a smart "Old" Guy from Welsh drew my attention on something seriuos. This is called google bowling. Of course I have never heard before anything about it.

"It all began with Google's aggressive attempts to curb link popularity manipulation by penalizing sites that purchase site-wide text link ads to get lots of incoming links in a hurry."

Google began filtering sites that indulged in this kind of linkage and either penalized or flat out removed the site from its database. Bad news for that business. Excellent news for their competition."

Nowadays purchasing site-wide links for our comeptitor is a popular back hat technique. I don't know whether you have any idea how to protect our sites against that?

All opinion is highly appreciated!

You can't really protect yourself from this. When bowled, your website will be dropped for most keywords (or sometimes removed) from Google. After a few days/weeks, your listing should be back to normal. Not much of a concern unless your making $1000s a day from SE traffic .

Thank for the replies!
My site isn't that goldmine one so far Otherwise Kenni as far as I can remember at some thread you suggest to get site-wide links in order to increase PR quickly. I'm a little confused, because with that we harm our ranking, don't we. Maybe site-wide linking from only one domain doesn't cause the bowl.

How can google penalize a site for incoming links?

If that were true, you could get your competitors sites penalized by purchasing sitewide links that link to their site.

good point web_or_dead. that would be very easy to achieve and would probably by now be a going practice. a DOSeo (Denial of Search Engine Optimization) LOL. Your competitor just drops some money and it would not be much if he gets some nice sized forums with gobs of pages and uses your main optimized keyword to get you thousands of links back to your page in a few days, causing GOOGLE to drop you like a rock. I don't think that is the way GOOGLE handles that. I think GOOGLE just counts some of the links coming from a huge site that has your link site wide and ignores the majority or they reduce the value to a really small amount that is close to none. this would make your efforts and/or money seem wasted and might keep you from doing this continuously.
