An excellent book by Luke Welling and Laura Thompson called "PHP & MySQL Web Development" - should be purple and white, find it at Amazon or your local bookstore. It's the best way to learn, IMO, as that's what taught me.

The book is VERY good.

Besides my PHP pocket reference by O'rielly, I have never opened a PHP or MySQL book. In my experience, you learn much better by doing not reading. By trial and error you will learn much much more than any book could ever possibly tell you. A few of my favorite sites are:

http://php.net (of course :p)
http://codewalkers.com/
http://www.phpriot.com/
http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp
http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/
http://www.devshed.com/c/b/PHP
http://www.sitepoint.com (has a few not to in depth though)
http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials.php

A simple search on google will deliver much more results, but those are a few of my favorites. Like I said, though, doing is much better than reading. It's also much more fun and saves you a few extra bucks.

If you ever have any questions feel free to ask me

Good Luck!

I've never ever read a book on php. Download the PHP help from www.php.net (preferrably in the .chm format) and read it's first few pages. You'll know every damn thing there is know about php...

That manual doesn't teach you PHP - it's just a reference guide. Rohan, have you seen the book I am talking about? And read/looked through it?

I'd never used PHP or MySQL until I made my site (www.raceformdata.com) and I found "PHP and MySQL For Dynamic Websites" by Larry Ullman to be very good. I didn't need to read it cover to cover or anything - just dipped in to a relevant section and adapted the example code. Had the basic site up and running in a couple of days.

and... nope i haven't seen the book you're talking out. Once my 10th exams are over, I wanna buy a JavaScript book, preferrably from O'Reilly or Wrox.

Look for the most simplest PHP tutorials. Once you learn the basics, it is pretty easy to learn the advanced things (as long as you know the basic principles.)

i reckoned sitepoint books are good. to start as a php/mysql freelancer is pretty tough because there are already many out there...and you have to show why you are different. alot of pple started being paid peanuts.
