Default Link Building Strategies

First, I included a link to my site in my signature (To begin building links), so does that mean search engines recognize it as a link (Because Google says I still have no links to my site)?

Second, where do I begin looking for sites who may want to link to mine (Since it is basically new), should I request links by sending them emails, or paying them to link, etc.

Any suggestions would help me out greatly, Thanks.

At the point you have more than 50 posts iwebtool will remove the nofollow tag on your signature at that point google should pick them up. Start by entering your site into free directories. That should get you started.

Here is a list that actually came from an iwebtool member just don't remeber who it was (if you want to claim the list PM me and I will credit you for it) I took the time to add the PR that GOOGLE has for each directory, it is pretty helpful in picking a spot to start:

Thanks for the directories. I have had more than 50 Posts for a little while now (not sure how long, maybe two or three weeks), and still nothing.

On a side note, my site is may be too general for directories (As it is a collection of top 10 lists I wrote; with various categories, guess I'll just have to research the right niche for it).

are you looking in the webmasters section of google for your link info or just doing a link:domain search? the webmasters section shows links from many more sources than the standard link lookup. do you have a google sitemap for your site?

I submit my sites to tons of directory, and try to get tons of affilaites which increase backlinks, which then increases pagerank.

Like I said earlier, my website would not fit well into any directory because of the diverse amount of topics it has,

Unless you guys have any opinions on which general category to submit it to.

The reason I mentioned that is I have a ton of links that aren't listed in the standard link results from google, but the webmaster section shows hundreds of links from the Digital Point Forum. That's inspired me to post in more forums.

I checked in the page sourse of another thread and found this nofollow" title="External linking" href="http://www.ableize.com

Does that mean Google does not follow my links ?

OK, So does this mean that the links in webmaster are equal to the link:domain name links?
Or does each site only count once towards PR?

No, the number of links shown in the webmaster tools area is far greater than the link:domain number. That doesn't mean that the webmaster tool shows all the links though. yahoo shows more usually. I'm not sure how Google limits links from the same URL. It's possible, but I don't think so. I know of a site that is doing an experiment on ranking well for a new site. The site owner has a link directory script that has links in the footer. He sells those links for $1000 per month. He put this experimental site in those footer links and is now ranking in top three across all major engines for his terms. That's the power of a quick 30,000 back links. Doesn't seem that any of the Google filters are working against him.

I always sugest buyinh SEO Book it will tell you all you need to know.

And BTW no=follow means ignored in Google But I have seen evidence that Y and MSN still ignore it but that debatable for some people.

Cheers
