  1. For one, put a link to your store in your signature on this forum and any others that you're a member of. That's a freebie.
  2. There are only 3 Search Engines you need to worry about: Google, Yahoo, and MSN. If you have links to your site, you don't even need to submit.
  3. Then, instead of getting listed in every directory out there, pick some targeted ones that are relevant for your industry.
  4. Avoid FFAs and Link farms as these can get you banned.
  5. Build quality content in your site that others would want to link to.
  6. Check out this post on link development at WebMaster World.
  7. Here is post about getting listed in Google in under 24 hours. It also has a huge list of article directories.
That should get you started.

Webgeek-

I've spent untold hours scouring the net to get info on links and SEO and this post is, by far, the best thing I've seen. It's written in a way that even a non-techie like me can understand it, and the two reference links are perfect. Thank you very much

Automated submission softwares doesnt help much. For search engines, no need of any submission - they will find you from backlinks. Directories need accurate manual submission. Most of them have filters to catch automated transmission. You may need to submit to few hundered free directories and probably buy links from few well known directories.
