It also depends upon domain name age as well. You have to be patience for some period. when your site will appear in all search engine then it will start picking traffic too.

the best way to get a page rank of 5 - 6 is to look for 25 pg r 6 directory sites and make sure the inner page you are going to submit to has page rank, usually a pr 6 site will have pg r 4 inner pages and submit , anything over 20 sites linking to you with pg r 6 usually gets you a page rank of 4 - 6, you will have to pay each directory to get 25 pr 6 links usually $10 to $20 for pr 6, done pay anymore than $25

I have found several PR 6 directories and many PR 5 that are free to submit to. If your 25 PR 6 directory links is a good benchmark, can I assume that some number (maybe 50?) PR 5 directories would have the same value?

Good point cwt36... perhaps you might be right but how about their inner page PR? Anyways I really gotta put aside sometime to focus on directory submissions.

I read all the above messages and I found them interesting and many of them really useful, so I would like also write my opinion just for the history.
Everything starts from the need of human being to achieve more in the life, in our point better PR, or link, or traffic etc.
Well, nothing in this life is free, I mean that will cost you money or time, it depends which you can handle better.
I am wriring down my experience and tries to promote my site. I own a web site http://www.marantoni.gr that has to do with school furniture.
My object is really rare cause not many companies involved with that, even not many people searching for that.
When I realized that I need to promote my site, I found ignorance in front of me from me and from other people that I asked about the promotion.
Do not forget that as you see I am coming from Greece and here the internet has still long way ahead.
Of course there were people that asked money for promotion and they confused me with their "technological" way of speaking cause I had no clear icon what I had to do and what to not do.
I decided to start alone this long travel in the interet world. My site is almost 3 years old and my company 3 years and a half.
My first thing was to see how many competitors I had to face.
My second thing was to see in which place they were and why they were there.
My third thing was to find what keywords did they use to have more appearence.
My forth thing was to see if I was a customer that I was searching for school furniture what kind of words do I had to use to find what I am looking for and I started to write them down (during the time I was asking new clients where did you find me? and if they told me a new keyword I added it)
So I start to write keywords in the search engines and I saw the results.
But how I could reach better PR, possition, links etc? As I was searching in middle of haos in the web.
I believe that if someone searching in his life, he is going to find what he is looking for or catch the troubles :-) so I found my first "weapon" that named http://www.checkyourlinkpopularity.com/howitworks.htm
Download this version and add the competitors sites or any site you would like, see the results, hit on the results see who link to whom and start to submit your site there also.
That will help you a lot first cause is very useful, second cause is free.
Start to submit your site to search engine or SEO sites and you are going to see results.
Remember the results in the net comes after 6 months period (my opinion and my experience)
One more useful and reliable site is the http://www.alexa.com even, I believe need improvence but it helps you to see in which place are your competitors and generally to have an idea where your existance is.
Well, all the above things plus 500 Euro per year that I am spending for promotion make my site to have PR 5, to be always and only first in Greek searchengines to have average about 150-160 unique visitors every day from 3-4 before 2 years and now the 90% of my sales comes from the net (I mean indirectly, first visit my site and then visit the showroom to buy, the Greeks)
The 65% of visitors comes from Greece and the 35% from around the world. We start to give offers around the world the last 6 months and do not forget that our object is not very common.
We have already start our export activities and the existance of this company is 3years and a half as I wrote you and everything comes through net.
Well, I wish to you and to all of you good luck to everything you are doing and try to do it right, costs more time but it worths.

Right, I will be sharing some secrets today regarding getting to the number 1 spot on google and yahoo. (MSN is another issue)

1). Select a keywords that you would like to be number one for.

(In my case I would like to be number one for the keyword: Linksmaster

2).Join a few Link exchange programs. I use Linkalizer, LinkMarket and of course Linksmaster (Linksmaster is autometed)

Now, each site will ask you for the "Title" also known as (the anchor text).

This should be the keyword selected in number 1).

3) A signature on your forum replies with your keyword to, and help people on forums to help yourself get ranked for your keyword.

----Dont stop untill you are the First result on google, then move on to the next keyword ----

The above is quite basic and is more to help out beginners!

1 last tip is try not to compete on the toughest keywords, although you will get to the number one position it will take a lot longer and I know that none of you are patient

GEt more backlinks for t he site. You can find link exchange partners through forums or email link exchange campaign. I think this is the best and cheapest way and it is for free.
