Question Automated Appraisals

Hey all,

I'm going to be launching an automated appraisals system (done by computer) by the end of this month and need to know a few things...

1) Would you use it?
2) How often would you use it?
3) What features would you like to see on it?
4) How could it be better?

If you want to try it out, I'm giving 2 people special access to it for this week while I still develop it. PM me if you are interested. Only these 2 people can answer #4 for now.

Thanks for advice/suggestions/comments,
-Matt

The way a proper appraisal from any human should be is by using Google, Alexa, PageRank, Overture, domain length/hyphen deduction, then some advice. (Also, there should be a different way to evaluate short domains (e.g. 3 or 4 character) and keyword/dictionary domains.)

My system does this... as for accuracy though, it's a bit high.

Here's the problem: Alexa put random HTML tags with random numbers inside them between each digit of the rank number on their pages... meaning I can't process the raw numbers in PHP anymore; I have to parse them all out first.

... which will take me a while to code -_-

"Overenflated"? What do you mean?

(Before I opened the site, a few months ago it had already appraised over 1500 domains...)

I had a play arround with it today and it seems really good, I'm not sure how accurate it is but I did manage to buy a domain that the system values at $2,871 so I'm hoping that it's at least pretty near the mark - maybe it's just wishful thinking?

simon: Woah, how'd you find out where it was? Did you use Google? (I do know and am proud that my site is the #1 result for 2 keywords... but...)

(FYI: The appraisals are very high right now, since the Alexa rank checker is broken but I expect it to be back soon...)

Anyway, I checked the logs and your four letter domain was evaluated as a "dictionary word" - you should have selected "base appraisal by length" for a more accurate appraisal (since your four letters isn't a word now, is it? ) Just info for the future...

Properly appraised, it should be:

RNAI.COM

Based by domain length, our analysis system estimates your domain is worth near...

$47

Number of Characters: 4
Number of Hyphens: 0
Amount Deducted for Length: $0
Amount Deducted for Hyphens: $0

Cheers

-Matt

Sounds pretty cool. I have tried a few automated appraisals but I am not sure how accurate they all are. Just ran one on my newest domain:

sharemyanswers.com

And it was appraised at $4,300 - $6,000. Of course I don't know how accurate this is. Let me know when your application is done, I want to give it a test run

Ah let me guess: you tried either Network Solutions or that other one by sedo (something like Spark Appraisals...), right?

Both stink Lol. They both have major limits and are too hard to use...

Hi Matt,

That wasn't the domain I bought - I think it was already taken. I got hearthenews.com as in hear the news (not heart he news) as well as proteinscience.net. I don't know if either are worth a much but it'd be nice if they were worth more than I paid for the domain registration.

Anyway, hope you get the Alexa rank checking sorted out - I think it's a really nice site.

Thanks simon. Good luck with your domains.

I bought an RSS Alexa rank checker for 10 bucks and have implemented it, so now it works.

The appraisal values are back to where they should be, and I added a little thing to where if you have a domain (say... ESS.com) - if you do it by "keywords", it'll use Google/Alexa/OVT to evaluate your name when really it's not accurate that way, since it's not a word or keyword.

Yet, people don't check "length" when doing short domains like this (also 4 char domains) - so now an alert is displayed indicating a possible faulty value. It's pretty slick.

Site opens tomorrow
