![]() | When it comes to your website, extra attention should be paid to every minute detail to make sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are seven important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your website performs well. 1) Do not use splash pages Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like "welcome" or "click here to enter". In fact, they are just that -- pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the "back" button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page. 2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valueable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy. 3) Have a simple and clear navigation You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate, they will leave your site. 4) Have a clear indication of where the user is When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means "abandon ship"! 5) Avoid using audio on your site If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they're not annoyed by some audio looping on and on on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it -- volume or muting controls would work fine. Last edited 02-09-2007 at 11:29 AM. Reason: URL removed for SPAM reasons |

![]() | It is good to limit the amount graphics that can slow the site download time. Believe it or not, a large number of people still use dialup. People seem to be very impatient when it comes to a slow-loading site. It is important to make the site friendly to search engines. Use html and css, instead of flash and javascript. This will search engine spiders an easy time to index your site.

![]() | Excellent tips, one I do not agree with is not to use splash pages, you can use splash page if there is need for it and its done very nicely. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi there, Good for a first post, and we sure hope you come back and make some more helpful posts like that again. I do however disagree with the 1st point which says not to use splash pages, sometime they are needed and can actually compliment the site sometimes. For example a website one of my friends is working, he needs to use a splash page because he is making a student/teacher/parent portal, and need 3 separate logins. It makes his job 127% times easier . But apart from that...great contribution to the forum.Regards, Kieran Taylor. |

![]() | With regard to the use splash pages, while I agree with the article most of the time, I think it is okay (even appropriate) on some cases. For example, it goes well with portfolio sites, graphics/design-related sites, artist sites, etc.

![]() | Totally agree...especially with the "No Audio" and "No Splash Pages"...I can't believe how many clients still ask for that! I have to politely educate them as to why it's a bad idea.

![]() | Splash pages are only good for one thing that I can think of... Traffic Exchanges ![]() I have learned that about traffic exchanges, people only have 15-30 seconds to view your page and if you have a nice splash page which opens your site in a new window and they are interested they will click the image or link then check out your site. Other than that, splash pages are useless. As far as automatic audio, nothing is more annoying!
