Keyword variation

Everybody knows that if you want to have good google rankings you must put some keywords in your page. What about similiar words? Have they an impact for rankings. I mean, for example:
I want to optimize the page for the keyword "farmer", so does the word "farming" give me any points for the keyword "farmer". Four letters of these two words are the same, maybe google "understand" that these words are similiar?
I think that keywords "farmer" and "farmers" work good for both, but what about the example above?

I honestly don't think they'll penalize you for having a few similar words in your page. I dit it all the time in one of my old sites and I was always top page in almost all 5,000 pages.

Yes without any fear go ahead. No one is going to penalize you. It is allowed. I am doing similar thing so many times.

I think farming is far away from farmer.
I recommend you to use the following tool to check the keyword density of a given page of your site:
http://www.submitawebsite.com/keyword_density.html
I found it very useful.
