Interesting indeed.
I tend to disagree with the conclusion. If the CEO was not technically sevy, but made technical mistakes then either he didn't have people around him that where techincally savvy enough(seems likely in this case) or they couldn't effectively communicate with him. Both options land at the CEO's lap.
I do think yahoo was an old company. I mean like set objective, make plans a -> b -> c. Structure etc. Whereas Google seemed more to me that it's was organic, general intent, but unstructured organisation so creativity was just allowed to happen. No 'home page' team etc like at yahoo.

Empower people and you get better results. Tell them what to do without empowering them to do it - as they have cross management issues, means you get poor results.
