Too many directories.

This days every webmaster owns a directory. This is a good way to exchange links, make money, increase AdSence clicks. Hard to belive that people pay $150 or $199 yearly to BOTW or Business.com.
Many pr5-7 directories apeear every Google update and all of them promoce that they are #1. How to understand if directory good or it another scam.
1. Look pagerank. Directory should have good pagerank even 3 clicks away from homepage.
2. Always check at least 3-5 websites submitted to directory before you submit yours. Ignore directory if too many 404, cheap sites like 1 page offers, adSence sites, adult contest, redirects. Search Engine spiders check all links on the page. Bad neighbors can hurt your SERPS and TrustRank.
3. Never submit to directories if they ment "Increase PR if you submit on our pr6 page" or "Buy pr5 link". Prefer directories who tells you more about traffic, business list. Google does not like when you buy links to increase pagerank. Moreover, Google might already ignore all links from directory and you never know.
4. Check directory metatags. All pages should have different metatags related with category.
5. Always look how old directory.

Like you pointed out, there is an awful lot of directy out there and more and more are being launched every day. I think more niche directories are needed not sure about General directory though

Yes but you also got to remember there are alot of new directories out there but how many of them are going stand the test of time most people think making a directory is fast money and build one and are all into it for the first month or two then they become bored and either abandon the directory or it gets closed down from them not paying there hosting fees and not really careing what happens to it.

Also i dont and will never display google ads or yahoo ads or any kind of ads on my directory or website i just dont like the look at how ads make the site look really bringing down the quality of a page. Only ads i think i would ever consider putting on one of my pages would be an organization such as aspca.org or something similiar that helps living things to live such as supplying a good home or food and shelter any other ads to me are a complete waste of time.We should look to give back to our world instead of taking from it.

Generally incorrect IMO to some degree on all 5 points!

No point in focusing on what isn't benefitical, would be rather better to have some decent recommendations about directories and discuss that.
