difference between backlinks and link popularity

Can anyone explain to me whats the difference between backlinks and link popularity? I've used different online link popularity checkers and backlink checkers and they all show different results, why is that?

back links are links in directories, on other peoples websites and so on. Link popularity is how many backlinks you have out there, or listed on search engines.

if they are the same thing then why their numbers don't match. One of my site shows link popularity of 1600+ but when I check the backlinks through iwebtools its around 350.

I think that link popularity is how many links you have on other sites, where backlinks are how many websites you have links on. For instance, here at iwebtool, I have 1800 posts, so my popularity would be reflective of that, but backlinks it only counts as 1. I could be wrong though, so don't quote me on that.

If you increase the number of quality backlinks, the link popularity will increase correspondingly. This is a good article about link popularity

Link popularity shows the list in search engine while back link is the link on others site.

The reason you get different results is because there are dozens of data centers scattered around the country for each search engine. and it varies because every time a tool queries for the info it can get the information from different data centers.
Each data center has spiders out crawling the web and they have their own count until updates..

Backlinks and link popularity is the same by the way.

That is right. For example, for Google, searching for a keyword using 2 different PCs at exactly the same time may yield different results.

back links are the links itself pointing to your website while link popularity are the number of backlinks that you have

the back liks are a kind of extract from link popularity , because you links can be from different site but with the same IP, from pages with many links on them, with PR 0 or etc.
