Default cpu/memory usage on hosting server

I was wondering how much cpu/memory usage your host provider allows you to use on a shared server?

My host told me that they would like me to stay under 5%.

Im not sure that is fair.

I guess that depends on the plan you have and the stats of the server. My plan doesn't have any limitations on CPU/memory usage. Most of the "too good to be true" host plans do though, and that is where they get you at.

I can some what see why they do this. It would suck being on the same server as another site that is using 90% of the memory.
I know a lot of big hosting that have 3000 sites on one server.

Ill probally end up getting a virtural server for my pit bull site after it takes off.

Hi there,

The only ones where you get limits are shared and reseller hosting, as they want to evenly distribute the speeds and quality to everyone else fairly.

I'd consider dedicated ... it's your own thing . I am going on to dedicated again soon (once I launch).

Kieran Taylor.

Default Re: cpu/memory usage on hosting server

If you are going to run serious project you should go with dedi. Scripts are the main reason of CPU limits.

How does this compare to a dedi?
They are basically spliting the server up between people right?

Virtuozzo creates multiple isolated Virtual Private Servers (VPSs) on a single physical server to share hardware, licenses and management effort with maximum efficiency. Each VPS performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server for its users and applications as it can be rebooted independently and has its own root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. Light overhead and efficient design of Virtuozzo makes it the right virtualization choice for production servers with live applications and real-life data.

What's the price for the package? The $9.00 per month for cPanel sounds fair, if you are sharing with 3 or 4 other people. The other upgrades have good pricing too.

Don't quote me on this.. Burstable is how fast it is capable for very short periods of time.

The price is a bit high, there are places that you can get a dedicated server including cPanel with 160GB storage and a lot more bandwidth for $100.00 per month with no set up fee. Tell me if you want me to find you a couple.

Hi there,

Try www.49pence.com they are brilliant, and are very cheap, there isn't much difference (in price between the low packages and the highest packages, and they are very fair. So you should be able to purchase a fairly good package at an affordable price.

Kieran Taylor.

That'll get you started. There are also an abundance of VPS providers out there that don't charge very much either. The thing to look for, in my opinion, is to make sure that prices include cPanel and WHM, or that the additional $35.00 for a license doesn't push you over budget.

Shared servers doesn't have a limit on the cpu/memory use. Everyone on the server has 100% access to the cpu, the busy websites just use more cpu than smaller sites. If you are killing too much and slowing others down, the administrators will probably suspend your account.

On a VPS, there is a limit on the amount of cpu/memory a user can use.
