Default Buyers wary of PayPal?

Hi, I run a site that uses PayPal for credit/debit card payments - I wonder sometimes whether some shoppers are put off by PayPal, WorldPay, etc.

Any views? It's expensive to take cards directly when you're just starting up.

It's not that much more expensive than if you had a merchant account. Merchant accounts usually charge a monthly fee, probably around $20.00 US. There is also a gateway fee, which can be between $10.00 and $20.00. Then you have to pay a percentage plus a flat fee for every transaction, just like through paypal. The merchant account I was going for charged .25 US plus 1.9% for purchases over $3000.00 per month, and 2.3% for under $3000.00 per month.

I think the only thing that turns people away from paypal payments is the misunderstanding that a paypal account is necessary to make a paypal payment, it's not. If you have a business account with paypal, then you can receive payment from anyone that has a credit card or bank account, regardless if they have a paypal account or not.

well if you targeting an global market.
us and european resident prefer the paypal transactions rather than
credit card. because they merely do not trust anyone with their cc unless
its an 1000% security.
asian country mostly used an egold account coz asian bank hardly or difficult to invert paypal credit.
so if i were you, i took an alternative payment system such as egold than cc since you're just starting your site.

good luck!

Make it clear to your buyers that their credit card information is protected by using Paypal. Once they understand the benifit of not having to give out their credit card informaton on the internet they will be very happy to use Paypal.

Hi, Indigo,

Shopping online entails risk, and most experienced shoppers will be comfortable with PayPal. The only negative I ever encountered was an inexperienced user who was put off by the registration and confirmation process of setting up a new PayPal account.

For an e-commerce site with a limited budget, PayPal is an excellent choice.

Cheers,

Jim

I use paypal to accept payment on my site, the most annoying thing about it is if users who have their card registered with paypal tries to pay directly with the card, they are unable to.

I have been using paypal almost since their inception. I have my accounts split into different realms. Personal separate from business. Look into it might be the way to go for you.

I use paypal to take credit and debit card payments for my hosting business.

It seems to cause a few problems for credit card payment as I have lost a few customers who signed up then couldnt figure out how to pay by credit debit card.

With paypal's credit card api you can have all the inputs on your site which makes it a lot more user friendly and just like any other payment gateway!

Paypal also offer a development toolkit to help intergrate this for most common web labguages. If you use paypal for payments definately something worth looking in to.

Hi there,

PayPal is brilliant for making payments and receiving money over £50, it is instantaneous and is 'free'. Very secure as well, and I don't think I have ever had a problem with it, and they even help you solve your loses when someone cons you.

We got conned by a hosting company one time and PayPal got every penny back and sued the company, we literally bought a years hosting up front and the day later, they closed down .

Regards,
Kieran Taylor.

The main problem with the paypal is that it doesn't accept all sorts of cc. So the personal users can't afford to have two..or three cards to enroll.

First off, if they are put off by paypal, even though it's owned by a huge reliable company and you don't have to sign-up, they are stupid. If you want, add a little note about Paypal and it's security on your cart page. This will help get those wary customers a bit more relaxed. You may want to say that you will give full rebate to those who didn't receive payment (this won't happen, and if it does, you can get the money from Paypal).

Convincing people to shop online is always a challenge unless you are Amazon. For me, I prefer a site that accepts paypal over credit card. Here is why. With PayPal, you know exactly how much you are going to pay and the vendor can't get a penny more from you paypal account. With a credit card, I can't say that for sure. If I submit my card number online, I can't be sure that I won't get charged again or more or have the card number stolen.

I think there may be a small percentage of people who won't use PayPal, but more and more it's gaining reputation. I think it's more of a slight branding issue...it makes you look a little more reputable to have regular CC payments, but not much, and if things are working for you don't change it. I don't think it will stay that way for long though. I'm sure that soon PayPal only will be just as valid as CC only. I say go ahead and use PayPal.
