Default Any experienced Linux users

I've seen several posts touch on subject of Linux but nothing that goes into detail. I, for one, would like to switch to Linux but I don't think my favorite programs would run on it, etc..

Will the experienced users share some of their knowledge?

I just recently installed linux on my other computer. Depending on what version of linux you install, it can be tricky. I tried Debian firstly, and the install seemed to go fine, but the xwindows display malfunctioned, so I changed to Mepis Linux. The software that is available for it is pretty broad, but, most windows software manufacturers don't make Linux software too. But you can get all the internet software(except IE), including flash, real player, etc. FF is even available for Linux.

There are three main programs that I paid for and must keep, at least until I could afford new software for Linux. It may be worth it if Linux (and there software) is better for web design. I do know that Linux is much more stable, secure, and uses less resources.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

I'm not a experienced linux user but I have been using suse linux for a while now and I have to say it is really easy to use, if your concerned about software, most of the time it will come with what you need or you can find a alternative to it, and if you can't there is something called wine that can run some windows programs (may be a little slower) but it will still run some programs.

Ah yes. If I could run my software on Linux, I would definitely go that way. Do you keep Windows around or strictly use Linux?

You mean they're both running at the time or you have to reboot to get from one to the other?

Hi there,

It means you get an option when the computer first boots up, and it prompts you on which OS to use. It gives you a choice on which one you would like to use.

I would suggest you use Ubuntu or Fedora Core, and if you are willing to pay, buy Red Hat Linux.

Although Fedora Core and Ubuntu both have all the necessary things you need to use Linux.

Here are the URL's for the 2...they are both free;

Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/
Fedora Core http://fedora.redhat.com/

Be careful though on which ones you download or order (free CD's), because some are designed for 64bit, and if you have a 32bit machine it will not work.

Regards,
Kieran Taylor.
