Hello,
I am new to all of this but I have been reading a lot on this site for quite some time. I know Google page rank doesn't really mean a lot sometimes but I have two questions I can't seem to find on this site. I know this is a basic question but I can't find what I should do. So I had to ask the ones who know.

1) Why do you get two different ranks for a page when you use the www. and with out the www. Ex: http://www._____.com and _____.com (my page has a rank of 2 with the www and a rank of 3 with out.)

2) Google site maps area it says Preferred domain (should I use this, and if so should I use the higher page rank with out the www or if I use the one with the www does it push it up to the higher rank?)

Sorry if this has been asked a lot I did a search and couldn't find anything on it.

To be honest...I find this a real good question. I saw that option in Google Sitemap too but didn't know what to do with it

Well, I will explain what is the difference between having www and non www website address.

Suppose if you have a site http://www.xyz.com and you've got 10 links for URL http://www.xyz.com and 10 links for http://xyz.com, than when google will calculate your ranking for a search term, your backlinks will be distributed between www and non www address of your site. In this case it will be respectively 10 and 10 for www and non www URL. It will rank your site low in search engines.

So, what you have to do is whenever you link your site with any other website , stick to one address. You can choose that address in Google Webmaster Central as well. By doing so, google will keep only one version of the address in its index, which will not distribute the link weight between the two versions of the address.

It's simple. They are two different website. www. is a subdomain.

Use an htaccess 301 redirect. It doen't matter which one you pick, Just pick one and stick to it.

Agreed! 301 is the best way to redirect, because spiders follow that redirection, and your page rank will be higher soon.

I always go for the www. but I don't think it matters, pick one and stick with it and like st0x said use htaccess redirect one version to the one you want to stick to, make sure all of your backlinks are pointing to the one you want to stick with.

sometimes you get two different ranks because some of your backlinks contain www. and some of them don't

Basically if you want people to come to www.yoursite.com then you want www, otherwise you don't.
