Hits and visitors are a different thing. Hits tell you how many files have been accessed from your site, and that can include any files including all the images on any given page. If you have a page that links to a CSS style sheet, and 100 images, a single visit to that page will produce 102 hits. When you want to know how many visitors you've had, you look at unique visitors, which is different than visits. Visits are how many pages have been accessed, and in your sites case, you've had 3000 visits, and 1000 visitors, which comes to an average of 3 page view per visitor.
