Is it important how your web site looks like?

The search engines don't care how your site looks, that's for visitors.

As a general rule, I feel it should be "function before form" (i.e. content, navigation, etc. are more important than the design), but you of course have to take things like the visitor's experience and usability into account - after all, it's the visitor and not the search engine spider that will (hopefully) buy something

A website with white background, with blue and teal colors appeal much! easy navigation is a MUST...but second only after looks!

i think it depends on site content.. for example if we have a photo portfolio site we need a simpler one to focus on photos, if our site is full of text content we need some good looking not to make users crazy

After all the debate is over the one thing that can overcome all is good content.
Even if your SEO is average, and your design is just ok, if you have good content, visitors will not only find you they will promote for you.
Content is King!
A great design is nothing without it.
My site design definitely needs a little more candy and color, but I am spending all of my time on content.
It will take all of an hour to build eye candy.
Content drives stats.

It is important to have a website that looks good because you will want a visitor to stay on that website and not make them go away, it is important to retain your traffic
