Do sitemaps make a difference to google??
If anyone can provide a good example of a sitemap that would be great.

Hi there,

Sitemaps are very important, as it helps search engines get to any page on your website through one page, meaning that your website is easy to crawl. You should always leave the sitemap on a high level part of your site (preferably in the root folder).

Here is a brilliant example of a sitemap: click here.

Kieran Taylor.

Google may not index all your pages unless you provide a sitemap.

You can tell Google about your site via:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/
Choose 'Site Status Wizard' and go from there.

They prefer a sitemap in XML format, but if you consider this too complex, you can provide them with a txt file, simply listing the URL of each of your pages on separate lines. It's all explained on their site and not too complicated.

Good luck!

Andrew

Googlebot started crawling my site more frequently after submitting sitemap. I would say it definitely helps.

I get an average of 4-5 crawls a day from Googlebot on the sites that have sitemaps vs. 1-2 for the ones that don't. My web store has a cron job to update the sitemap every morning at 4am and send a ping to Google to crawl.

The pages that don't have sitemaps I would see at most the index page being listed on Google. Sites with sitemaps have almost all and with every update the new content is added almost automatically.

Thanks to Mar for the sitemap creator. Now I have all my pages with sitemaps. Lets hope for the best.

Follow up on the sitemap issue. Not sure if they're directly related but yesterday morning none of the pages on my myspace site were listed on Google. Sent in the sitemap last night and its now on the 1st page of searches for a couple keywords.

Go figure...

I submit a new sitemap everytime I add a few pages and they seem to get indexed pretty quick, I believe it is because of the sitemap.

Yes it does plays an important part. Before I added the sitemap, I've only got one key word in the top 50. After submitting the sitemap, I've got 2 keywords that went from nowhere to No.1, one from 47 to No.3 spot.

You've gotta have a sitemap. Preferably in sitemap.xml, sitemap.html and urllist.

The advantage you get from a sitemap may depend on how your content is structured. For example if you have lots of content first, and internal navigation last, google may not pick up these internal links quickly. In this case a sitemap (google XML or web page) will definitely help.

If navigation comes first in your content, may not have the same advantages.
