I think it's one of the basic and important element to put our website to the top ranking. They look for the meta tag to find the keyword that user keyed in.

It can only help - as long as your keywords are targeted and relevant, and you don't spam the search engines by adding hundreds.

It helps search engines identify relevancy of your page to their result, and relevancy contributes to where you rank.

i've seen a couple of sites that don't use a meta tag for a keyword. but i'm going to experiment on it. if it works i'll let you know.

maybe experimenting on not putting a meta tag for a keyword and just a meta tag for some like 'abstract'..

Meta tags have helped me rank pretty well on directories I submitted manually to that crawl your site at submission time to bring up the description and keywords for inclusion in their listings. I have read before that Google does not put any emphasis on meta information but rather the keywords in your title and contents. Google considers meta info to be Web 1.0 while their algorithm enforces Web 2.0 standards. They look for around a 2% repetition rate of keywords while engines such as MSN and Yahoo can get as high as 5%-8% keyword density. Trying to get high SERP on all those engines can possibly end up being a tightrope act as Google may consider your SEO efforts for Yahoo and MSN to be keyword stuffing.

I've also read before that MSN accounts for around 20% of searches. Mostly from people who don't change their default IE page from MSN.com. I guess these would be newbies cause I see more msn searches finding my web store rather than my webmaster site which would attract a more internet savvy audience.

Any comments on this? I would love to hear back from the other experts.
