What is a links farm?

I've heard it said many times, but I wouldn't really know what one was if I saw it.
I understand it's pages with links to other pages. But every site is like that. Here on the forum there are links all over the place for exmaple.
So my question is what is a links farm and how would you know if you saw one?

It is basically a site dedicated to covering the site in links, and is an attempt at making backlinks, Google penalize so stay well away .

I would stay away if I knew what to stay away from.
Do you mean outbound links, internal links. What? It's seems rather mysterious to me, could you explain what it is?

Hi there,

Imagine it like this...a farm produces things right, and a links farm produces backlinks, by you submitting your URL. This then places your link in with all the other hundreds and thousands of other links, and this is a link farm.

They basically look like sites 'covered' in advertisement, and have that general spammed look to them.

Sorry of this isn't clear enough but I can't think of any other way to word it.

The first one I suppose could fall into that category, although it has a legitimate purpose, DMOZ also. Maybe someone else can explain it a bit better for me, I am finding this hard to explain . Sorry.

I think the whole thread had already answered your question - what is links farm? If you still not satisfied with this then you might need to rephrase your question stating what exactly do you want to know. Is it about inbound link or something else? It will save your time as well as others?

Referring to the guides -i've already read- You should avoid getting inbound links from pages conatining only links, no text, and from sites which are visited only by robots no webusers.

No, how can Google know what a sites purpose is? Surely it can't that's only in the mind of the creator. So that definition makes no sense to me.

Yes, I believe that's a link farm.

To my understanding, link farm is where you become a member of a site that has a lot of links. Then, when people click on your link, they will be directed to a page full of the other members' links. It applies to other members as well because other members will also have your link in their pages.
