What do you think about topsites??

Hi i am a newbie to this but just thought i would share one of the websites i have created. The easiest website i ever got started was

www.poker-top-sites.net

Everyone seems to have a different opinion about topsite lists but i think they are quite a good traffic generator as well as fairly accurate in rating some of the best websites? I also got a pr of 4 in just 2 months on this website.

What do you think?

Topsites always remind me of porn rings. Spam that links to spam. The fact that topsites are basically one massive advert just puts me right off.

Do you get much traffic? If so, where does it come from?

I am getting about 20 uniques per day. 90% of my traffic comes from the top 10 sites in my ranking list.

I understand where your coming from but i have seen some awesome topsites out there.

There are alot of really dodgie ones out there..

I've posted on a few topsites, back when I was REAL new.. theyre good for getting yourself listed.. if they PR..

Personally, I just don't see the income potential there.. I did get some traffic from my banner on the topsite pages.. but who do you suppose was at a topsites page clicking on my banner? Probably my competition..

I could be wrong mind you, because the only reason I ever went back to the page was to see if I was moving up the list, I never clicked anyone elses banner.. *shrug*

I think the problem is - you don't see credible sites listed on these things. Amazon, eBay, YouTube etc. They smack of not having enough money or skill to promote yourself properly.

I've got PR 3 in about three months, but I haven't noticed any larger traffic increase. The content - that's a king. Make content, services, etc. fun. high quality, easy to use and you get traffic. The only one you have to do - show for visitors you exist.

What type of content are you suggesting for his Top Sites page?

i don't like top sites. most of sites i joined gave back less visitors then i sent. and they don't even have direct links. ar you wait for ages to be listed. i did find one: http://www.top100arcades.com/ which is quite good, if you have a gaming site

Do you mean submitting links to the top sites by saying joining top sites or you pay for some commercial to be shown on their sites like banner ads?

Thanks for your ideas guys. I have a poker topsite which is now a pr 4 after only a 2 and a half months.
Traffic is about 20 uniques per day.
I am thinking of slowly just introducing great content to the site and moving the topsite away from the main page.
I don't no. Have tried many things and this topsite seems to work the best
at the moment.
I have just been listed on a site with 1500 uniques a day.

Are topsite lists new or have they been around for years??

Here's a newbie question. What is a topsite? Is it like a link farm, or a banner exchange site? I've never even heard the term "topsite" before.
