Eh, yeah, back then they were. The reason for their simple homepage is because Sergey Brin hated HTML.

Google's servers use a highly configured and customized version of Linux... Redhat I think?

It's coded in C or C++, that much is for sure.

So, seeing how far google has come in seven-ish years, where do you think it'll be in seven more years, way out in 2012?

You can really tell the difference. I think that Google made a real impact on the internet, it's simply amazing. I can't wait to see what else they come up with.

I remember when I first heard about Google. I was a die-hard Alta Vista search user for a while, and people started rumbling about google. First of all when I saw it, it was weird because all the searches and portals at the time were spammy overdone messes, so it was a shock to the system to see google.

The first reaction was, how can a site with so little on it exist and make money? Over time though Google started winning out with superior results, and the clean interface was a huge plus, at least for me. When I wanted to search I wanted to search and I did not want to have my eyes refocus 5 times as it looked through news spam and all the other stuff that people were displaying on their pages back then.
