Is too much really bad?

I don't really know where to begin. Maybe I'm concentrating on the wrong thing but do paid link exchanges really help or make your sites situation worse after time? I've done both and pr seems to fluctuate over time but I'd like to be ready for the Oct. update. Being new at this sort of thing really detores me in many areas. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

My opinion is that it is not really necessary to pay for links, but if you do, then those links should definately effect your PR. If not, then they are not worth the money you pay. There are too many sites out there that don't charge you to get your site listed to pay for a site that doesn't make a difference.

I would rather it effect my serps than my PR.

SERP's are Search Engine Results Page. There are a good number of factors that you can look at but SERP's are the most important. What it means is your position, or how close to being the first result in the results for a search engine query for a given keyword or keyphrase.
Too many of us pay too much attention to PR and hardly any attention on SERP's.
You can build your PR up by having links on any site, but having your link on a site that is relevant to the content of your site will help to build your SERP ranking.

Well that's interesting to know. SERP's are something I would definitely see as being a HUGE part of positioning. I started my site in June 21st, 2006. My predicted rank is 3 (So Far), my links are at 10,876, and my relevant is at 96.2% wish I hope is a good thing. I never trade with sites not related to what I'm doing. PR was something I thought was important but then again there's about 100 things you have to do in order for it to work. I have been racking my brain for months trying to create something that works. Alexa has help me in many different ways by page ranking me. When I first started I was at 4,322,000, now 2 months after jacking with everything I'm sitting at 308,000, Amazing to me. I think I will be in the top 100,000 end of Oct. Anyways, I'm probably typing too much. Thanks so much for the advise!!
