Smile Web page ranking question on a new site?

Hello Again Webmasters,

It's a question thats been driving me nuts since the new update. How can I have a better alexa ranking than a site thats been on since 1999 and ranked in the top 10 for a keyword that has a comp. of 1,320,000,000 sites. I'm ranked better by 31,000 and have only been on for 3 months. Any good explanation to why this would happen? I'm really puzzled and expecting good from it. The site I'm mentioning about receives about 250,000 plus a month and I get maybe 5,000 a week which I pay for. Alexa I thought did a ranking based on all aspects of a site. So I'm assuming I'm opt. better+more links+all out kicking that arse. Any ideas websters?

Thanks,
tag909

Alexa rankings are traffic based, an old site is not neccessarily better.

Well come on, what was the keyword? 'The', 'a', I don't think it would be too hard to get a top 10 listing with a page optimised for the word 'the'. Also, what do you think the 1,319,000,000th site is about? These numbers are 'indicitave' at best and totally screwy at worst. If a search term is relevant for one in twenty websites on the planet, I can't imagine it is too powerful a keyword, that's all I am saying really.

These people are actually running a sponsored adword on google for the search term 'The'. Some sort of mistake surely.

I hope this goes some way into making you feel a little less 'nuts'.

Thanks for the info. Paul. What I'm having a hard time understanding is that when I compare my site vs the site thats top 10, I looked at the inlinks, backlinks, seo tools for optimization, everything I can think of and I'm beating the site in all fields yet I'm not listed even in the top 100. My pr is even the same or it will be during the next update. It just amazes me I guess how some of these sites that are not optimized very well can climb the ladder and be on top.

I know, amazes me too. I have stopped validating my sites totally. Clean enough certainly but a few minor errors here or there and Google seems to like it - why - who knows? I can guess with the best of them but it is all guesswork.

After many years at this I now tell people to just be honest. So much SEO advice and so much nonsense. Just concentrate on your visitors experience.

I bet if you posted your site and your competitors site we could find a hundred reasons why your site ranks lower. So I would suggest, as an idea, that you forget all about your PR, search engine ranking for keywords etc etc and concentrate on adding value for your visitors. It sounds like you are running a real business. A real business needs sales, not traffic. There are lots of reasons why a site may want traffic, but a real business needs sales. Concentrate on that and forget the SEO. It sounds like you have probably done enough (or overdone it) already. Write some articles for newspapers and magazines. A printed url can generate tons of traffic. Try advertising in free ads - again tons of local traffic. (By advertising I mean free one or two liners, ie; TOYS -www.bestkidtoy.co.uk - bargain toys and great ideas - based in blahdyblah.)

I am looking forward to the Google replacement. Google is all a bit too establishment now. In my opinion the doors are wide open for a new concept in ordering search result listings.
