Default Link Popularity does it really matter?

Does it actually help your PR by having several different sites linked to your url? Me myself am starting to wonder! i have seen pages with stats like 0 websites from google results 5 from msn 10 from yahoo and this sites pr will be 5 to 7!
then i have seen website with 1200 links 100 from google 700 from msn and so on and this url will have a pr of 2 or 3, the 1200 links will be relevent to the site and have a page rank's between 4 to 6 and the links are not farming links!
I am starting to think that "Link Popularity" has a small factor in how your site is ranked! But i dunno i may be completly wrong!!

Backlinks are the only cause of pagerank.

Link popularity is the biggest factor in where you appear in SERPS. The links should be from related websites only. You can achieve a high PR by getting high PR links to your site, But unless these sites are related they will have no effects on SERPS and will only increase that useless number that is pagerank.

Theres alot of other factors to considerd, age is another big factor. Some places will always have a high rank, without hardly any back links, these are well established sites.

But dont worry page rank isnt everything, content plays an important part too.
