Default Maximum Page Size KB's

I am running my internet on a high-speed line, so I can't judge just how quick a page will load up for those who still use 56Kbps modems. If I do the math, a 56Kbps will load at approximately 5KB's per second, or a 100KB file in 20 seconds. But, are dial up users accustomed to waiting 40 seconds for a page to load, or do they tend to go else where that offers smaller page sizes? I have read that max page size should be no more than 50K(that was in 2000), and 128K(in 2003), but can't find stats for todays standards. Does anyone have any ideas or opinions on this?

I'm sure that any year it's better to keep your pages nice and tiny.

My personal rule is to stay in 100Kb size and this is more than enough in almost all the cases.

Here is some description about html page size from one SEO software company.
Quote:
HTML size
Page size matters because search engines limit size of a cached page. For example, Google will only cache a full page if the size of its HTML is less than 101 Kb (images and external scripts are not included). Yahoo! caches text of up to 500 Kb per page. This means if your HTML page is too large, search engines will not cache the full page, and only the top part of the text will be searchable.
So what is good for search engine is also good for users. This means that must be below 100KB.
