Default Optimize a forum

Hi,

I am wondering how would (or have) you optimize a forum? I am gathering you just edit it manually, but what about all the disgusting dynamically generated HTML? I think for vBulletin you can buy vbSEO but that costs as much as the software itself.

I dunno how it's done exactly, but the HTML files here are actually SEO'd, a vB mod I think.

That's pretty cool. I think a lot of search engines first look at urls before the content because that is how they find it, but what mod are you using?

I think that keywords in urls are of slight value. Personally I have learned through experience not to use mod-rewrites on forums. Unless you rewrite all urls to be the same you potentially end up with more variations of urls which creates MORE duplicate content and potentially gets your key pages penalized in favor of a different one. I do not think the search engines deal with duplicate content in a very graceful manner all the time, so I feel my concern is legitimate.

In my experience the search engines have no trouble indexing the default urls for posts and topics presented by VBulletin an Phpbb.
