Default keywords in subfolders?

Do SE's take into account the names of the subfiles on your website when considering site relevance? For instance:

http://www.pinkhair.com/hair/styles/...ndilauper.html

would hair, styles, color, pink and cyndilauper all be considered relevant?

I think you have too many folders. Over 2-3 isnt reccomended. I heard search engines pick up subdirectories better.

A spammer recently got billions of pages on google with 3 weeks.

I read about that, but I don't think it was a spammer. What's the diff between a subdirectory and a folder?

Well they are basically the same.

Subdomain - eg: apples.scrizzle.com

Folder - eg: scrizzle.com/pears

Basically apples.scrizzle.com, is like hosting 2 different site on one domain but scrizzle.com/pears is like having just a normal directory.

Oh, like a subdomain. I actually don't have that many folders, I was just reading up on keywords and that thought popped into my head. So then it would be beneficial to have subs, but what if the sub isn't part of the parent domain? I mean, what if there are no links or no relation between hotactress.buyyourgadgets, and w3.buyyourgadgets?

Words in URLS do count as keywords in searches, But there is nothing to suggest they would be seen as any more important than keywords on the page by google.

But, The way i see it, If a user sees highlighted words in the URL they will be more likely to click that result in google.

Makes sense to me. So would there then be no difference as far as SEO goes between subdomains and folders?

As far as i know google doesn't mind where the page is located on the server, Only what is written on that page.

Default Re: keywords in subfolders?

Since the beginning of this year I try to rank our homepage better in the search engines. One of the things I have done is to rename the subdirectories and the file names to keywords. Especially MSN (I watched this search engine because they update their index much faster than Google do) ranked this sites after a few days significant higher.

Hint: if you do this with existing sites itīs a good idea to write these updates in a file called .htaccess, for example:

Redirect 301 /oldname.html http://www.yourdomain.com/newname.html

Otherwise all visitors which use the old name get the famous error 404.
