Default How Stupid are your visitors?

One rule of marketing is “Know your customers” I guess?
Perhaps the number 1 rule I don’t know.

I think I may be underestimating the stupidity of the average visitor and that I should assume they are far more stupid than I give them credit for.

I here that banners containing the words “Click Here” out perform others by over 30% - one would assume that a third of visitors haven’t realised you can click banners?

Popups work! If they didn’t then they would have gone long ago due to market forces, the very fact that they exist means visitors click them?

When you spell the url wrong and get that spam page with multiple popups – pop-unders and thousands of adverts – those pages work too! People actually click the adverts.

Even the popups that say “you computer may be infected” download this software… they work too for the same reasons.

Spam emails work for the same reason - they exist - someone pays for them so they must work.

If our customers have this level of stupidity perhaps we need to change the way we market ourselves?.

Default Re: How Stupid are your visitors?

But if changing my ways includes going against my principals, I'd rather not go down that road. These techniques may work, but they don't work for me, and I like to assume my customers are as smart, if not much smarter than I am, and I don't fall for these tactics. I realize that there are stupid people in the world, and there may be alot of money in the business of exploiting these people, but I just have too much ethical value to do that and still be able to sleep at night. Not to mention, it p**ses me off when it happens to me, and I write emails cussing and screaming(tapping my keyboard really hard).

The reason there are pop up blockers is because of careless use of techniques such as these, and the fact that I have to be inconvenienced to the point that I have to run spybot, registry mechanic, avast, bug fixer, and pop-up blockers on my computer daily.....really gets my blood boiling. But then again, I'm poor, and that p**ses me off too.
