Default Indexing help

Can someone advise me please?

I have taken a clients website to work on it for them. They have named their pages with numbers....so home is 3456 etc. It is indexed and is being picked up on basic seo.

We want to rename the pages....what will happen here? Will we need to build a new site map? will google track the sites new pages quickly if we rename them all?

Hope someone can help

Default Re: Indexing help

The best bet is to create new index files etc and have a "301 redirect" put into the 34234 numbered pages to the original pages. This way, Google is sure to change your listings to the original one.

For example:

52343543.html redirect it to index.html (Google will pick this up if you use 301 redirect)

For instructions on 301 redirect, check the following page:

If you don't link to the old pages then Google won't have a problem with this. I don't think a redirect is neccesary, although it may help.

So just rename the files and make sure you are not linking to the old file names but the new ones.
