Hi there,
Can anyone give me some examples of things I can do for increasing the traffic on my website?

yes you can if not already submit your site to web directories, social networking sites like digg, write articles and add links back to your site.

Write a press release and submit it to press release sites and of course you can pay for traffic.

Also join traffic exchanges like traffic swarm or traffic bunnies.

- I try to build as much of my sites as possible with xhtml script making it easily searchable by search engine spiders.

Google is not the only search engine so think outside the square. Sometimes you can get just as much traffic from other search engines.

Here is a free download for submitting to 66 search engines. Use once a month, 1st of each month is best but only use every 30 days. I have been using it quite a while and it does help.

You should submit your site to directories manually, you can use slow submission with 6 or 10 titles means you have to submit per day your links to 10 to 20 seo friendly directories with your optimized title.

Article submission : you should submit approx one or two articles in articles directories like ezinearticles.com.

Link exchange with relevant and quality site.

You should also join forums for more additional traffics.

blog submission and press release can also beneficial for traffics but you should use this after above three because manual directory submission, article submission and link exchange will give you quality backlinks with quality traffics but press release will give you only traffics.

I have used LinkReferra, you have to work at it, but does bring in traffic. Maybe not sales, but if it is traffic you are after.
I mail out business cards in my out going mail, including junk mail that has postage paid return envelope, placed a banner on the back of my vehicle,
leave a business card when I dine out. Bunches of other ideas, I have seen an up tick in direct hits, as opposed to referrals.
