Yes it is, changed my opinion, No it isn't or ist it.

Surely this depends onthe directory. Some directories are absolutely pathetic. Why would you submit to a directory, is it to get a backlink with PR attached, or is it as a potential source of traffic?

If you ever think you're using a directory as a traffic source - you're wasting your time and probably aren't very smart in the first place.

Directories with PR and not thousands of links = great for your site AND seo
Directories with thousands of links = practically useless

depends on the 'quality' of the directory that you'll leave your link

I don't think it's a waste of time if you'll choose only the best directories that you think could help your site in terms of traffic, IBLs and PR - all in one listing

It depends on the directories, and your methods of submitting. Using a run of the mill software application that drops your link to 1,000 terrible directories really won't do much for you. However hand submitting to a few big directories can net you traffic and some decent backlinks.

I offer a "widget" directory. It installs on another site with just a little bit of code and I just launched a counter script.

If you go to http://bungeebones.com/subscription_sites/ you will see how many requests for directory pages each site has made since yesterday at about 3 pm EDST. This has just been launched and I will be doing more in this area, but so far, it looks pretty good.

Those figures do not include the times that top level directory page loads, only the subcategory pages. So what it means is any one with links in those directories are being seen.

I am also tracking which categories those requests are made to in order to get an idea of what people are looking at. I hope to find what could be considered an optimum number of links to have inside a category. So far it seems the categories with the most links draw the most hits but it is very early yet to make a definitive statement.

There are a lot of directories out there. I hope the quality of the sites that my widget is on makes it a better directory. The widget gets placed on sites, real websites, that have real content. The directory is just an add on for them that they don't have to maintain (we do).
