Is there value in backlinks or SEO, then how can we define the value? Is it purely in terms of SE rankings, SERPs or PR?

There are many factors that decide your position on the search engines. Backlinks are one of them.

Some Search Engines, especially Google gives a lot of importance to the number of backlinks a website has. Google give more credit to websites that have a larger number of quality backlinks and consider those websites more relevant in a certain search query.

It is one of the best factor that helps your site ranks well on SERP. SE's tends to look, evaluate and give a high importance on the quality and relevancy of links coming in your site.

Back Links do matter and here is my reason why.

Google still uses PR to determine something, else it wouldnt even still be around. What does it determine? Higher Serps? Relevant ranking? Who knows these days, but it still plays importance.

And, add to that, if you have ten relevant links which send traffic, it only takes one sale from those visitors and the backlink has just become very, very important.

Ya theme based back links are helpful and rank better. But if links are not related then it is just time wasting.

Backlinks is not so important.

I've made sites with SEO for clients and did not build one backlink and it beat sites with 1000s of backlinks in SERPs

Backlinks are very important to keep your site alive and kicking some other websites' a$$e$.. There are lots of benefits you can get if you have lots of backlinks.. it can also help you in terms of SERPs ranking using your KWs as anchor text and some will be a good source of traffic
