Default Replacing Lapto HArd drive

Hi guys,

just wondering if anyone could shed some light on hard drives.
I have a hp dv4000 and the hard drive displays as a defective device.
It's basically stuffed beyond repair.

The hard drive is a hitachi trvelstar ATA/IDE 4200rpm
model:IC25N060ATMR04-0
p/n: 08k0863
I have gone to the companies website and run their software to no avail.
says defective device.

I cannot find the exact model on ebay to buy and was just wondering what type of hard drive i need to buy.

1) This drive is says ATA/IDE, does this mean i cannot use sata?
2) Also, do i have to get something with the same rpm? i.e. 4200rpm
3) Are all laptop hard drives the same size? (width x length)?

If anyone no's any good cheap sites or is selling a hdd please let me know.

Thanks for any information in advance.

Don't worry about not being able to get the same drive or your laptop, I replace drives regularly and fit compatible drives from a reputable manufacturer, (Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, to name a few). Being compatible does not mean they are second best, indeed some of them may even be better than the original.

1 ATA and SATA are not compatible, most laptop drives are still ATA
2 No you do not need to get one with the same drive speed, as a general rule of thumb the faster the spin speed the quicker the heads on the disk can access the information. Generally the next spin spped upwards is 5600, and 7200.
3 Laptop drives are 2.5 inch drives. More compact than the 3.5 inch desktop variety.

I buy direct from trade suppliers, so I am unable to give you a good eBay supplier, try a local supplier instead, with the price of disks dropping they may be able to offer you a competitive deal.

I've always been timid to open up a laptop, but I think our vaio is getting ready to go. It makes a crazy grinding noise, but remains completely functional and doesn't lock up during this noise making. It could be dust in the fan, because its REALLY REALLY dusty here.. The stuff builds up on the fans everywhere, like snow on a roof. It's disgusting, and harmful because it acts like an insulator and holds in the heat. Electronics in general dont last long here.

Hi guys,
i ended up going to my local supplier and got a new samsung hard drive 120gb (double this size of original)with speed of 5400rpm for $83 AUD.
I asked him a bout the 7200rpm but he was against it because he said the battery power would depreciate very quickly.
I actually took in the old hard drive so i couldn't go wrong. Very easy process and i was surprised at how easy the hardware install was. Thanks HP.

Thanks for all your advice guys

eautocad i was trying to fix a cousins laptop Sony Vaio laptop that also had this grinding noise.
I checked the fan for dusk and did find quite a bit inside, hair as well. I cleaned this out and tryed again to no avail. The grinding noise will still there.
Turns out it was the fan and just needed a replacement. I ordered one from a local sony supplier and put it in and that solved my problem 100%.

There was a good tutorial online i found via google which had pictures and everything to changing the fan. Seems like it is a common problem.
I can't seem to find this tutorial anymore. Sorry!

I know the exact niose you are referring to and it really makes the computer un-workable.

Goodluck ** hope this helps.
