Great article with a load of good advice. Too many new web owners don't know where to go what to do, and end up getting ripped off by opening up their wallet too soon. Site promotion is a long term affair.

Backlinks should be relevant and Quality.
Backlinks should have dofollow ( For PR juice)
Don't increase backlinks at once, do it slowly, naturally.

First, you should start with business listings thing in very popular relevant sites. It would give a big branding to your site including directory submission task. Then go with the article submission strategy after defining high traffic sites for articles like ezine , amazines etc.
