Kurdish PKK guerrillas say Turkish helicopter shot down
Kurdish rebels say they have shot down a Turkish attack helicopter during clashes in northern Iraq.

No details of casualties were given with the claim from the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party.
Its fighters are being pursued by the Turkish military in a cross-border operation.

As troops continue to patrol the snow-capped mountains in the border area, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates called on Turkey to keep its offensive as short as possible.

Ankara is targeting PKK rebels it says use northern Iraq as a base to stage attacks in Turkey.

As the first soldiers killed in the campaign were buried, there are fears the situation could escalate.

A top rebel commander has been quoted as urging Kurds living in Turkey's cities to rise up and fight the authorities. And in the wake of the Turkish military action, Iran says it has reinforced its borders.
