Default What's best, short or long filenames??

I tend to add long filenames to my images - e.g.
/marsguitars/images/roto_pinks_electric_guitar_strings.jpg

This includes lots of good keywords, but a lot of sites seem to use just a product reference - e.g
/marsguitars/images/rs665ld.jpg

Is there a good reason for this, or is my way better??

Paul, if i were you i would use keyword rich but not too long filenames for images. I have never optimized for Google imagesearch but since i belive it's algo must be very similar to the websearch you should separate your words with hypens instead of underscore. And one more thing, do not forget to write proper, talkativ but not spammy alt tags for the images placed in the content.

As far as Yahoo Search is concerned, the contents of the page name are relevant in search results (or at least it used to be so)
It makes more sense to call a file "key1_key2" rather then "x434fj"
Obviously, don't use extremely long filenames, otherwise there will be too many keywords involved.

Bagi's right, keyword rich filenames with hyphens not undescores.

I'm not sure about image naming is effective way for image searching, better you put ur keywords in 'ALT' tag.

I saw a video of Matt Cutts, where he describe the importance of ALT in image searching.

File names does not really matter, its more the alt tag which should be used for better seo. Even though if you correctly name the image file & alt tag along with enhancing Google image search from webmaster tools you will see a dramatic increase in search results from images on your website. Naming images does help slightly if you want people to find your image easy in the image search on Search Engines, but if you make them to long they will just be considered spammy. Also using long name is sometimes not useful so instead use short but descriptive name for image and the use of alt attribute is good.

Not an ideal file name. File name should be short and try to include your main keyword in page. It will be beneficial.

Agreeing with most people here, I would try to use keyword rich file names rather than shortened and unidentifiable names, but would also avoid over excessively long names as well.

A balance in the middle I think.

I perfer for ease of use to have somewat shorter file names as they are more easy to read and understand. It also looks a lot better
