Drupal problem - "The directory files/images is not writable"

My new Drupal project was doing OK, but now I can't edit or create content, I just get the message:
The directory files/images is not writable

I've checked in my cpanel file manager and it shows the file permissions as 0775, which I thought should be OK.

I know nothing about unix, Apache or php... so where do I start?

I can still create and edit blocks, themes etc, but not content. Any ideas?

Have you tried changing it to 777 to see if that works?

I tried... but it wouldn't let me do it! I guess there's some security feature that stops me setting it to 777? I'm doing it all through cpanel gui tools, not command line
