Press releases can work granted that they're written in a useful way. The thing about getting your press release picked up is that it has to be news...and that is the kind of news journalists would even care about. Important news to you and me may be that our brand new website is up and running and is now open for business. Journalists don't give hoot about that kind of news.

But they do care about current events and issues. Check news.google.com or the other news sites for the kinds of things that can get your PR picked up. Next, weave your business into that kind of news item.

And just like Serverpoint said, don't expect everything to just fall in place because of one press release. Use a combination of marketing methods instead.

I used to use prweb which was free at that time.. It does help.. I would like to know some decent free pr sites... not article sites...

PR and articles are a great way to boost SERP position and gain tons of backlinks. I suggest using this for new sites or sites that need a boost in traffic. It also helps when you are not listed in the SE to have an article/PR distributed to some high traffic sites to get indexed within a few days or even hours!
