Default Perl / Cgi ?

Something that i've come across plenty of times but could't quite put my finger on.

What is CGI and what is Perl? Do they have a relationship?
Someone provide me with a simple but detailed description of each one -- i'll appreciate it!

My knowledge about Perl is a bit shaky but if I understand it, it's similar to CGI.

CGI = Common Gateway Interface

Perl is a common replacement to PHP though much less common than PHP itself. All perl files end with a .pl extention.

I don't know much more... :p
