Is Seo Over Rated?

Google sent 3751 people in dec
Yahoo! sent 232 people in dec
MSN sent 0 people PS thanks msn for being so great

4000 hits a month isn't bad, im not complaining . hell its free right?

Did those search engine hits make one of my sites a success through my eyes?
The answer is NO.
What made my site a success through my eyes is the thousand of hits i get a month from users telling their friends and posting my link in forums and what not.
Why do they tell their friend and try to share the site?
Its simple the site is worth going to again and again
The site offers all the features that are needed to create a successful community.
1) Board for communication - A Bulk of people want to interact with others
2) Fresh Content
3) Friendly Staff
4) Simple navigation
5) Eye friendly
I can go on but im sure your bored by now.

Im sure a lot of people at this board would kill for 4000 free hits from search engines in a month
The question is would it do you any good?

I must admit i have 1 or 2 sites that would not benefit from this traffic a month.
Why? because the sites dont have whats listed below and at this moment seems 100 times more important than seo

So what do you do? Create the dream site you always wanted, and run 20 bucks worth of ads. its easy to find advertising for 1 penny per click

If you can register a domain and pay for hosting im sure you can find 20 bucks some were to promote your site.

then let the word spread
im not saying dont use seo because it does pay off in the long run if its done right.
Im not saying that the entire list applies to all sites

I didn't find this post boring more likely thought-provoking, luckily i had some time to organize my thoughts.
I think that the possible ways of promotion mostly depends on the website and the market segment where it presents. For instance i have a Hungarian forum for webmasters and since the local market previously had no demanding supply to fulfill many great mind's freetime i had to take care of the promotion only in the first months. Now those great minds and the self optimization which was clearly described in your post take care of the promotion. Otherwise i found your list extremly useful about the possible keyfactors, but there is one at the top of the list the board for communication which is not always given. There are many many segments where it is not work though this would be the extra advantage , which would do the traffic driving easing the dependence on the major search engines.

2) Your factors do not apply for business sites. How would they get traffic in that case?
3) Some factors you listed are actually part of SEO (fresh content is an example)

SEO is not overrated, it is in most cases UNDERRATED!

I get 1,000,000 hits a month, all are spam...But I think what we are talking about here is natural occurring organic traffic....Meaning unique visitors...I don't want to be mean, but 400,000 hits really is a small number...

i guess this would be considered a seo tactic used by some webmasters.

I agree with SEOwebTools this can apply to some sites
but, not all sites can have fresh/unique content and be stunning looking ... for those a little SEO helps

SEO is defnitley not over rated. There are sites that works and make profit, simply due to SEO. There are niches that is very expensive to get paid traffic. There are nuches that generates millions of hits via google.

Ofcourse SEO is not a sure fire success for everyone. There could be cases where efforts are not worth the returns. One has to find what works best for him.

True it does depend on the type of site you run. I am happy with the visitors that Google and Yahoo send me. You need to do both some times, fourm links and social bookmarks AND SEO.

Great post.

If your users are doing something, posting on forums etc, it is much better to have a quality few than a few thousand poor quality.

Is seo overated? Not when you have to deliver results.

If you have the time to sit back and let it happen over a few years, fine, but using some of the stuff I have learnt and picked up, I believe SEO is one of the major reason the site I have done recently is ranking so well.

Even though, a good thought provoking post.

400.000 ??? Now are you talking about PAGE HITS? or UNIQUE VISITORS??

For December, (last month), I got 2.765.335 page hits - that is from 55.419 unique visitors.

And I DONT think that the numbers above represent a good traffic, even in the "small" category of my website

But if you have 400.000 Unique visitors a month that would equal to around 13.3400 unique visitors daily. - In my book that is a great traffic. Congrats!
