Default To be a moderator of a webmaster forum

It sounds like a great time....Lots of benefits, sure, there are 1 or 2....But in reality, I would like all of you to know exactly what we put into this job, and what we get out of it.

What we get:
Respect: Only sometimes....Sure, we've done something to impress somebody, but that doesn't mean that we've impressed everyone.

Power: Sure...That's a laugh. In reality, we have none...Sure, we ban spammers, but we have to be careful whom we disagree with. We can't just ban someone just because we feel like it.

Access: Access to the backend of the forum....Really, it's not that impressive...It's like having access to the toilet tank.

Links: Only sometimes do we actually get a real life link for the work we do. Most of the time, we don't get a link, any awards, or even so much as a thanks....

Headaches: True. While everyone of us moderators enjoys what we do, there are more headaches included in being a moderator on a high profile forum like iWebTool than there are benefits...

Ability to make new rules: Sure, it's true we make the rules...But if a member doesn't agree with the new rules, we have to take that into consideration...If there are 2 members that don't agree with us, we have to seriously consider that...If there are 3 or more members that don't agree with us, we have to bend over backwards to find out how everyone else feels. If there are more than 10 members that don't agree with us, we have to listen to them and change the rules back.....

What we give:
Time: Yes, believe it or not, every single one of us gives our time....If we don't, we get canned.....That's right, we get demoted back down to member.

Effort: Oh, you just don't know how much effort goes into operating a webmaster forum.

Patience: We have to be extremely patient. We have to deal with dumb asses so much more than you might think.

Spam: We get about as much spam as we get regular posts...Yet somehow, most members don't even know that we get spam. Although, we get to see lots of great porno sites at the same time...Plus, we get great discounts on Viagra...

Disagreements: That's right. We don't get along....In fact, we fight more than we talk....It's like living with a permanent PMS victim...Just kidding...We don't actually fight at all, we are all great friends...And I think that this is the greatest benefit of being a moderator. We are all friends.

Politics: Oh my goodness....You wouldn't believe the politics we have to put up with. My successor quit because of a disagreement with other moderators.

Stress: Oh, yes. This is the big one. Trying to figure out what the signature policy should be isn't the only stress that we deal with. We also have to deal with absent forum owners, crappy spammers that are sooo smart they actually make it difficult to ban, crappy posters that only leave posts like "Good Job" or "Welcome here".....

Benefits: Actually, we get to try some things that most of you would have to pay for...But only very occasionally. I have actually had the opportunity to try out quite a few tools that I normally wouldn't have had the opportunity to try.

.................................................. .................

In reality, if the job wasn't worth it, nobody would do it. So the job is worth it. At least for some of us. I'll tell you what makes me happiest to see as a moderator/forum manager....It's posters that make an attempt to actually respond to posts. What I mean is when a question is asked...A good answer is given....There are only a few members that I can think of that actually pull this off..Mars is one of them, Hasan is a good poster, although, he has his "stress me out" moments....There are more non-good posters than there are good posters.

Here is what I propose. If a member signs up and becomes a problem member by responding to every introduction post, and every "I've done something good" post with "Congrats", I propose we ban that member....Okay, that might seem a bit harsh, but that is what I feel like doing sometimes.

You know who you are....You are the one that is only here to advertise your site...You have absolutely no interest in bettering yourself as a webmaster, you have no interest in learning how to create the perfect website...You only have interest in spamming this forum.

Don't be that person..Be the "Midlandi", be the "Bagi Zoltan", be the "Marsguitars", or the "ChartMusic"...be the "OldWelshGuy" or the "Hasan"....Take note from these posters...They are what makes a great website, as witnessed by their incredible websites...they are what makes a great forum poster....as witnessed by their incredible ability to create great posts.

Nice post. 100% agreed. I just found my name, "Hasan" provably my name!

Without any doubt I've learnt a lot from this site, I'm regular poster. Even I'm not posting I'm reading. Reading is the best way to learn. I won't hide the fact that first time I can here for backlinks in signature, but now totally devoted to learn and spread my knowledge.

Now I feel I'm a part of this forum, hate to see spammers and link seekers (sorry guys)!

Thanks for everything guys!

You got a good write up about what comes with the role of a mod or admin for a forum. Basically, its a very demanding job.

Hasan no problem this was the forum where i changed my mind. I wanted to become a real webmaster rather than a spammer, so i know what you are talking about, though i never thought you would be a spammer.

Jump it is an excellent post, i have no idea where you got the inspiration to write it

Great post Jumpenjuhosaphat.

I get exactly what you mean on many of the points especially on the spamming parts and the effort and stress.

I would like to add that i have learned plenty in my short time here and was showing my brother my sites today and while on his laptop i did a search for some common entered searchs and realised that i am the first breeder on google and my members forum is the next link below it. The results above where sites that would be irrelevant to searchers.

I believe this is thanks to the likes of the guys whose names you have mentioned and also to yourself.

So its just to say a thanks from me.

God applied to be a moderator, but his qualifications didn't meet our standards...
