It's a nice little tool... but are meta tags really relevant these days? They were highly used in the early days of the Internet, but were badly abused and therefore search engines started ignoring them in favour of more sophisticated search methods.

Meta tags aren't all that well used these days, Google and the other big SEs don't make use of these. Some smaller and niche directories still make use of them. The bit I find surprising though is that a some optimisation tools (like IBP, WebCEO, etc) still place weight on these tags.

i agree with mars and alan.

Metas might have lost their importance (unlike some years ago) coz they have been used for KW stuffing/spamming.. some SEs are still giving some consideration with them but it's just not a powerful method anymore

The meta tag descrition is one on the most important things related to SEO.

Plus both users that are doubting meta tags are using them on all their sites



google dont use them im guessing your referring to all of the tags, but yet my meta tag description falls under my site name in google searches

There is not written statement from any search engine that they don't use meta tags. I firmly believe to ahieve search engine success, everyone have to maintain 100% website standards and Meta tags are one of them.

The truth of the matter is that you should use every tool available to you if you are serious about optamising.
You have to remember the search engines have billions of site to crawl, imagine thats your job and some make it easier for you...think on!

At one point meta tags were considered a relatively important factor by search engines. AltaVista and other older search engines used them to help determine a site’s theme as well as relevance to a given term. This is no longer the case; search engines now rely on much more advanced techniques to do this. That said, meta tags still have some life left in them; they are sometimes used as the snippet of a site's content in search engine result pages by Google, and possibly other search engines. It's also possible they still have a little influence with some search engines in determining a site’s content.

Meta tags aren't entirely useless and as I submit to some smaller SEs they are still used. The big SE's don't ignore but don't use them as they have done in past years. Take the keywords meta tag for example G doesn't take account of these ahd generates it's own list based on the content.

Using meta tags however still falls under good practice, and any method for improved SEO should be taken advantage of.
