Default One Way Links

Morning everyone,

Firstly, congrats on a great forum and some of the tools on the home page, really useful.

I just wanted to ask something.

My method of getting any site underway, is to dramatically add as much related content as possible, followed by one way linking, to many of the free directories on the internet.

I have always believed that the one way linking is the most important way to go.

I have also started the rec linking campaign as well.

Are there any other steps I should be looking at from here on in, aside from content?

Also, if I were to pay for some upgraded links in directories, would I be penalised for this? As I am reading all over that Google now does not like paid links?

Any tips would be great, and I will hopefully be sharing some of mine over the course here.

Hi Spency,
you seem to be concentrating on the right things... just make sure that your links are relevant (i.e. anchor text/desription/category), include 'deep links' and make sure your conmtent includes your target keywords...

Good luck, and I look forward to hearing how it goes

That's a good start!

Remember that SEO is subdivided into 2 parts: on-page and off-page optimization and choose your links wisely

Hi guys,

Thanks for replying.

Aira, when you say choose your links wisely, do you mean choose carefully who we link to, or where we get links back from?

Both. Linking to a bad site is NG. Links from a high ranking relevant site are dynamite.

You can't control who links to you, so links to your site from a bad neighborhood can't hurt you, and you won't be penalyzed.

I always did wonder if linking from a bad site could harm.

I always thought that it could not, as how can you control who links to you? You have no control so I did hope there would be no penalties.

Am I wrong to think that any link is a good link, i.e. any back link is worth having?

Yes, choose related links to your site not unrelated links...

I have put into place a recip linking program, but only with related sites, ie Property and Financial, nothing else.

Does it really matter how many link swaps you have as long as they are relevant and related ?

If someone reported your site for paid links, probably. But for me, I would rather build links for free than waste money for a penalty.

But, directories offer featured links, which are sometimes well worth paying for, and I would just like to know why Google would penalise this?

Google is penalizing the sites that sell links. So Google is manually penalizing the sites ....Not only directories but also some blogs which do sell the links are penalized wrt PageRank.

some count more some count less, but every link counts ... a link cannot not be counted negatively worst case scenario it will have no value

That is true, link swaps are worth something but one way links are worth more .... so get some of those too.

I would not be surprised if it penalized sites (now or in the near future) that did not sell or bought links. I am sure that it would penalize anyone who is trying to mess with their SERPs algo and the PageRank aglo regardless of whether there was money involved.

Remember google is out there to satisfy its "customers" (the ones that are searching for stuff). If anyone is messing with their SERPs then they get unsatisfied "customers" and will try to penalize any site that is inserted in the search results with trickery ...

Well what happends when you have links to your site from bad nabourhoods depends on the situation..

i know many hosts for example that have had lots of problems when spamy sites have linked to them..

for example:

If your site is an e-commerce such as hosting you will start to see a huge increase in fraudulent sign ups which can end up costing you big $$ in charge backs as well if you site contains a forum or blog you will definitly notice a large amount of spam posts & comments that will contain links to very bad sites and since the links are from your domain that can definitly hurt your standing within google...

You might as well add a link to a porn site or warez page or even a link farm from your own page... so be carefull...
