Default H1 or H2 Tags

on my home page i use a H2 tage for the title only because the H1 tag makes the font too big. Will this have the same effect as a H1 for ranking purposes in Google. Or would you recommend a H1 tag.

If so can I change the font size of the H1 ?

You should be able to change font size by adjusting your css file, remember to adjust the smaller headings such as H2 & H3 to a smaller font size to keep in neat

Editing the H1 tag with CSS is the way to go... However, dont make the H1 look like your regular font on the page, as this will only damage your results. - H1 size HAS to be bigger than the rest of the text on the page, H1 has to stand out.

use CSS
just write this in css
HTML Code:
H1{FONT-SIZE:10pt; COLOR:#666666; font-style: normal; line-height: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;}
if you want another size edit FONT-SIZE
color #xxxxxx
enjoy

This would go into the <head> of your web page. To apply size definition at the location of your message, inside of the <body>, use this:

<h1 style= "font-size: 140%">My message</h1>
<h2 style= "font-size: 120%">My message</h2>

When you apply styles at the location of your string (your message), this will over-ride all other formatting. However, it is best if you do your style formatting 1st - in a separate CSS style sheet, 2nd - inside the <head> of the web page.
