Default How to create a user friendly atmosphere on the forum

I guess that this has to do something with marketing?
A large number of potential members depends on the fact how much is a forum pleasant for members.

How to create something between? Not a board with a dictature (give bans for wrong spelling etc), but also not too much relaxed (without authority - members can do anything they want).

And on the visual style? What would make you stay on one board, and what would make you come back again?

I know that the content is the most important thing, but is there something else, regarding the management of the board, the look of the board etc///

Best regards,
Djura

Agree that the content is very importent just like the design. I don't think that hireing a top designer would be necessary but should avoid the use of unnatural (techno) colours. The really crucial element of a board is the community. If i see valuable posts from knowledgable people i surly will return.
And about banning. I know two causes that may worth the bannishment. First is spamming, and the second one is the insulting.

Moderation is very important. If you own a forum and you see people hurting others, you need to be stong to remove them asap.
