Question Google Update?!?

Hi guys!

I know some of you have lost PR since the update of Google.

I'm a little confused about this update...
How did Google trace paid links? (even those in-content paid links)
Is there really somebody who reports to Google about paid links?
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=66736

Anyway, mine is a blog and I've just created it this October so I didn't expect any PR (it's just my first blog).
Still learning more on SEO.

Could you give my some ideas or theories on the recent update, about google's algo?
It wasn't just an update, wasn't it?

Thanks!

Google doesn't look for paid links on an individual basis apart from the odd occasion, and from complaints.

You need to get a grip on how google handle potential spam, they do it algorithmically, ie they bring in best guess methodology of identifying possible paid links. Also keep in mind that 'paid' also means reciprocated, traded etc. the definition of paid is an exchange of goods for money or kind (kind being traded goods).

So how do they do this you could ask.
1. A block of links close to text that reads. 'sponsors' or featured links' or 'Supporters' for example is a fair indication.

2. A block of text that is links that are varying anchor text that is not semantically linked.

3. A block of links in a font that is smaller than the other links on the page

4. A block of links that appear at the foot of the page yet point to external sites.

It would be fairly simple for Google to identify the above, and also take action against it by devaluing 'potential' link mongering. remember that google do NOT have to prove anything, a suspicion (algorithmically) is enough.

There are lots of other ways, such as block level link analysis, that would flag potential spam, sitewide outbound links is another classic.

First of all, thank you for your comments. It's good to see more people with the positive answers on their PR on the ongoing google update.
It just goes to show that people here are good SEOs!
Congratulations to your PRs!

Funnily enough the sites I do no seo on went up!

The sites that went down I dont care about as due to my recent change in tactics my customer base increased (NOTE...PR dosnt pay the bills...customers do!)
