If it were up to me, I would NOT follow the advice given like adwords, link exchanges, etc. Put yourself in your potential member's shoes. Why would they want to join your site? What advantages could you give your members? How is it any different than every other social networking site out there? Offer something unique that no one else has, something that people want and you should see increases in registration rates.
