Default Time Warner to Sell 5% AOL Stake to Google for $1 Billion

Article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/17/te...17aol.html?8br

Some interesting quotes from the article:
Quote:
Google has agreed to give AOL ads special placement on its site, something it has not done before. Until now, Google prided itself on its auction system for ads, which treated small businesses on an equal footing with its largest customers.
Quote:
Google will also provide technical assistance so AOL can create Web pages that will appear more prominently in the search results list.

Google is giving AOL free credits for advertising, which is really just ruining the whole AdWords bidding system. This will simply drive the keyword prices up and make it harder for the "small guys" to compete with bigger companies which can afford the increase.

But what really makes me mad is that Google is actually helping AOL to get better search results. I always thought that search engines were supposed to try and provide the most relevant information as possible. By giving an unfair advantage like this, Google is no longer calculating the results based on the relevance and quality of the websites. When using a search engine, would you rather get a list of links to honest websites with good content or links to sites which don't have very good content and the only reason they have high results is because they were given an unfair advantage?

Any opinions on this?

Geez, sad. Google is truly going to own everything...this is just the first of many steps.
